I am German and an avid reader (of course), used to literature of Goethe, Schiller, Tolstoy, Shakespeare . Nonetheless I read on, enjoying the fine writing, and still certain that a climactic end was in store. While I say that with some element of sarcasm, it wouldn't be a bad idea. At the end of the book there are three separate discussion guides for families, kids, and classroom. Reading the author interview at the end helped and the underlying story was so strong I was able to get past the niggling objection. I like they give a little backstory to the characters as well. Definitely a 5 star story. Each of these six steps Malouf brings into focus through reflection on his life and other examples. Another reviewer here asks why anyone would want to write (or read) about such "tasteless trash" as cannibalism, incest, and the like; well, the answer is because the most delicious humor can emerge from the banality (even absurdity) of the way Alcorn's quite ordinary academic characters respond. I really enjoy the Ten Huis chocolate shop and the small town life of this mystery series.
