As a Bob Dylan fan for going on three decades, since the beginning of my teenage years, I've read several books about the Man, including Sean Wilentz's newly acclaimed, ultimately overrated "Bob Dylan in America. Its centered in the middle of the page with a border of blank space that if taken out would shrink the size of the book about 25%. I could relate to this character in finding herself, and trying to figure out where she belongs. Intstead, it's the small things, whether it's the start or end of important friendships, or the discovery that moving to a new town isn't as bad as you thought it would be, that helps each of these characters (and by proxy, the reader,) grow as people, as they continue on their path to adulthood. This is a clean read, realistically written with grown up characters, and I will definitely be re-reading it,. If you read Ford's earlier work "The Ten Thousand" you will be interested in this book. Pola's Flower is a must-have. He calls each of these volumes a "portrait of an age", and I think that's close enough. This volume shares one aspect of their research, hand-colored fashion plates from antique periodicals. This author always does great research and weaves a believable story about ancient times and her people seem very real. The books have a page to chart progress and add comments.
